Content of the study

The German construction industry has experienced turbulent times in recent years, driven for example by increased material prices, a lack of reliability in the funding and subsidy framework and rising interest rates.

Despite these dark clouds in the construction sky, it is worth taking a closer look at the industry, which still contains very attractive sectors. One sub-segment that deserves particular attention is civil engineering and infrastructure construction, which has attractive market characteristics and benefits from sustainable trends and drivers. For example, the mobility transition being pursued in Germany requires the massive expansion and modernisation of rail networks. The planned expansion of renewable energies and the electrification of industry require the expansion of the electricity grid. Urbanisation and increasing digitalisation are driving demand for water pipes and the expansion of fibre optic networks. These are just a few examples, but they illustrate the significance of the sector for our daily lives and Germany as a business location.

In our view, the infrastructure sector is highly exciting and offers enormous potential for financial investors along the entire value chain. In order to identify the most attractive investment areas, we have segmented the sector, analysed the identified segments for their potential for investors based on various criteria and then derived their attractiveness in the light of various strategies. This shows that, depending on the investment strategy, different segments win, but that the top segments all offer high potential for private equity.
